Why can't I edit data where the source is Shopify?Updated 18 days ago

Why this happens

When a field is marked as sourced from Shopify, the value lives in your Shopify store rather than inside Expose. Expose reads that information directly from Shopify so your schema stays aligned with what is actually in your store.

Because of that, you cannot change Shopify-owned values with Edit value in Expose. Instead, Expose shows Edit in Shopify for fields that must be updated at the source.

INFO

If a field comes from Shopify, Expose treats it as read-only in the app and pulls in the latest store data the next time your Overall Agentic Search Score is calculated.

How to tell whether a field is editable in Expose

In Expose > Scoring, open the relevant category and review the field list.

  • If you see Edit value, you can enter the value directly in Expose.

  • If you see Edit in Shopify, that value is managed in your Shopify store.

On the Scoring page, the Data Source column helps you confirm where a value comes from. It shows whether the field is sourced from Shopify, automated by Expose, or entered through the app itself.

NOTE

You may also see tables that include labels such as Field, Value, Status, and Update type. These help you identify what is missing and whether the change needs to be made in Expose or in Shopify.

Where to update Shopify-sourced fields

If the value is empty or incorrect, update it in your Shopify admin first. Common places to check include:

  • Store details — your business name, address, and contact information in Settings > Store details

  • Products — product titles, descriptions, images, SKUs, and pricing in Products

  • Policies — return, shipping, and privacy policies in Settings > Policies

  • Navigation — menus and link lists used for breadcrumb and site structure schema in Online Store > Navigation

What happens after you update Shopify

1. Update the value in Shopify - Open the relevant area in Shopify and save the corrected information.

2. Return to Expose scoring - Go back to Scoring in Expose and review the affected category, such as Brand Identity, Products, or Site Structure & Navigation.

3. Wait for the next score calculation - Expose will pick up the updated Shopify value the next time your score is calculated.

4. Confirm the field status - Reopen the field list and check whether the Status now shows the value as complete.

TIP

If you are trying to improve a low score quickly, start with categories that show Improve Score, then use Edit in Shopify wherever Expose indicates the value comes from your Shopify store.

Quick answer

Q. Why is the field read-only in Expose?

A. Because the field is owned by Shopify, not Expose. Expose reads it directly from your store to keep your schema accurate.

Q. Can I override a Shopify value in Expose?

A. No. If the field is marked as sourced from Shopify, you need to change it in Shopify admin instead.

Q. When will my update appear in Expose?

A. After you save the change in Shopify, Expose will use the new value the next time your score is calculated.

Q. How do I know where a field comes from?

A. Check the Data Source column on the Scoring page. It shows whether the value comes from Shopify, is automated by Expose, or was added in the app.
